Description

Ikat is tie-dyed, woven cloth. This Warp Ikat is mainly used in West Africa. It has been made using the same techniques for centuries and the techniques are still used often in Ghana and Nigeria today. The fabric is tie-dyed and dipped in Indigo, “the Yoruba use warp stripes of alternate copiers to create contrasts in their ‘country’ cloths.” (Gillow, 2009).  Warp-Ikat textiles vary and are very complex.
